Engagement may feel like an art, yet there’s plenty of science to prove its impact. Research continues to show that when leaders communicate clearly, build trust, and create accountability, their teams thrive — and so do their organizations.
According to Gallup, only one in ten people naturally possesses the talent for great management. That means effective leadership isn’t just a given; it’s something most people develop through awareness and practice. The encouraging news is that leaders who intentionally build skills in communication, empathy, and trust can have an extraordinary impact.
Employees who work for great managers are six times more likely to say they have an excellent quality of life. They’re also more engaged, more productive, and more likely to stay with their company. In addition, two in five employees leave their jobs because of poor management. The difference between a thriving team and a struggling one often comes down to how well a leader connects.
Empathy, communication, and trust are essential qualities — they are the foundation of engagement. In fact, 92% of employees say they are more likely to stay with an organization when their leaders demonstrate genuine empathy. These are the leaders who listen before they speak, encourage growth, make people feel valued, and circle back with an apology when necessary.
When you lead with care, you improve performance metrics and you improve lives. You create workplaces where people feel energized, supported, and proud to contribute. That’s the measurable power of artful engagement.
Lead with Heart — and Watch Your Team Follow

The best leaders are caring leaders. Theodore Roosevelt said it best:
“Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care.”
That truth lies at the heart of artful engagement.
Caring leaders listen more than they speak. They stay present, communicate honestly, and create space for others to feel seen and valued. Their teams follow them from genuine trust and respect.
I’ve seen this kind of caring leadership expressed in many ways throughout my life, yet one experience in particular stands out — a friendship that reminded me how powerful true connection can be.
I recently lost my dear friend, David. He’d retired from a long and fruitful career in Broadway theater management just days before we were introduced to one another. Immediately, we had a connection, and within a very short time, our friendship grew into one of great trust and respect. I had not experienced such a strong connection with someone with whom I’d known so short a time. The initial experience caused me to wonder what it was that allowed our friendship to grow.
Over time, I discovered he was a longtime leader with distinction. It seemed wherever he had an affiliation, he was greatly admired. Before long, I came to marvel at the way he connected with nearly anyone he met. He’d cultivated many deep friendships that in time became friendships of mine. What I came to understand about him is that he had a way of connecting with others that was so personal, respectful, caring, and full of joy that it seemed unfathomable that he had enemies of any kind.
When he passed away, I was floored by how many people showed up to celebrate his life and mourn his passing. I realized that I can only hope to be like him when I grow up!
Lesson Learned: When you lead with care, you create connection. You build loyalty, confidence, and collaboration. You bring people together to fulfill a shared vision. That’s what transforms leadership from a position of authority into a source of inspiration.
